When was the last time you spent a little more time on your toenail care? You could do a trim here and there, but taking time to check on the health of your toenails is worth your time, too. While some habits are helpful, some behaviors can only bring bad news.
The PediFix team offers several products that help people with their foot care, including toenail care.
Here are some do’s and don’ts to consider in your day-to-day routine:
Do work with clean hygiene tools.
How do you feel about those old toenail clippers in your bathroom? If you are unsure of the last time you sterilized them, it may be time to toss them in the trash. Using unclean hygiene tools is one of the fastest ways to invite a toenail infection. If you go to a nail salon, ensure the technician uses sterilized tools.
Do keep your toenails dry and clean.
To avoid fungal infections, keep those nails clean and dry. Moisture is a must-have for bacteria, so don’t make it easy. Wash your feet regularly, and be sure to keep your toenails clean. While sticking to proper cleansing, don’t forget about moisturizing. Apply lotion to lower the risk of developing dry skin.
Don’t be rough with your toenails.
Are you pulling and tearing your toenails instead of trimming them properly? Stop — and be gentle. Ripping, tearing, and pulling your nails can lead to ingrown toenails. Instead, care for your nails the right way. Using clean, sharp clippers, trim straight across. If you find you are rushing during your at-home pedicure, consider finding an opportunity when you can take your time. Hurrying the process is not worth an ingrown toenail.
Don’t ignore nail changes.
Whether your nails are changing colors or becoming brittle, any change is a reason to pay attention. Our nail health can tell a story about what is happening in other areas of the body. If you notice changes to how your nails smell, look, or even feel, go ahead and contact your doctor. Often, undesired changes to our nails can find remedy with simple solutions.
If one thing holds us back from showing our toes this summer, it is scary-looking toenails. Instead, step up to a PediFix solution if you face any toenail troubles: JustForToenails™ Enhanced Nail Polish. Our product uses natural tea tree and lavender essential oils to cover discolored nails and help clear up the problem. Over time, patients see improved nail appearance, reduced discoloration, restoration of healthy thickness, and more. We want you to feel confident the next time you show your toes.
