Mike Trout is a center fielder for the Los Angeles Angels. The eight-time MLB All-Star and six-time Silver Slugger Award winner will have to miss the rest of the season because of Morton’s neuroma in his right foot. It’s a condition that causes radiating pain in the ball-of-foot that intensifies with activity or tight-fitting, high-heeled shoes. It’s caused by a thickening of tissue around nerves and between metatarsal bones, usually leading to 3rd or 4th toe. Sometimes, it has no apparent symptoms; other times, it causes an audible ‘clicking’ sound, a tingling, numbness, or pain radiating out towards the toes. Other people describe it as a constant feeling of standing on a pebble or marble in your shoe. Ignoring this condition can make it worse.
Trout missed his eighth-straight game on Sunday and is expected to have corrective surgery today. It’s certainly an unexpected end to the first regular-season of a 12-year, league-high, $426.5 million-dollar contract. “It just didn’t get better,” Trout told ESPN. “It’s been that way for a couple weeks. We tried injections, tried the cryoablation [cold fluid] — thought that would help. As soon as I went out there and started running, it flares up. After it clears up, in about 30-40 minutes, it’s tough to walk on.” Surgery is always reserved as a last resort for any foot condition.
If you think you have Morton’s neuroma, see your foot care specialist to rule out a possible stress fracture. Then change to more comfortable shoes and add quality ball-of-foot, arch pads, or supportive insoles.
Pedi-GEL® Metatarsal Support Pads (#P8208) are soft, contoured Gel pads that provide two benefits — they cushion and protect the forefoot from shock and pressure and support the metatarsal or ‘transverse’ arch to help relieve calluses and neuroma pain. Self-adhering to stay in position in shoes.
FELTastic™ Metatarsal Support Pads (#P86) are soft, contoured; genuine wool felt pads adhere to the insides of shoes to cushion, protect, and support metatarsals. Unlike flat pads, their unique orthopedic shape helps improve the position of foot structures to relieve the cause of forefoot problems, not just the symptoms, like calluses and pain — sometimes described as “like walking on a pebble.” Felt conforms to the wearer’s feet for customized relief. 1 pair.
Pedi-Smart® FeatherStep® Insoles (#P195) feature durable leather construction with extra cushioning to absorb shock and soothe pain from calluses, neuroma, and other ball-of-foot discomforts. Also helps to improve foot posture and balance. Fit comfortably in most shoes. Trim to fit. 1 pair.
